PL▷YITLOUDRR Guest Mix #001// Ray Complex

Presenting the very first of our guest mix series, from the up and coming producer Ray Complex. Ray has been producing trap music since the start of 2011. First, here is the interview!

Hi Ray. It’s great to be collaborating with you, what can people expect to hear when you DJ? Is this guest mix you’ve put together for us a good representation of that?

When I DJ, I try to show the audience something new with something familiar. I like to show people that some genres and sounds mesh better than what we thought. I believe this mix will showcase that.

I actually found you on Soundcloud by mistake. I was searching for another Coeur de Pirate remix and stumble on yours. And I have been a fan since then. For those who haven’t heard of you yet, how would you best describe your music style and what are your main influences?

I feel the foundation is rooted in trap, rap and hip hop, but I bounce around between making more club friendly “trapstyle” and more downtempo, ambient, future bass type music. My main influences are people like Clams Casino, El-P, Shlohmo, TNGHT, The XX, Trent Reznor, Ryan Hemsworth, just to name a few.

How is the electronic music scene in Chicago and how does that affect underground producers like yourself?

I think as of right now, there are a lot of producers trying to put in work and shape up our scene for the summer. I believe the long winter is forcing everyone to be productive. We have a good variety of producers coming from here, such as Flosstradamus and Krewella, and I think more people have their eye on Chicago because of them. I think a lot of the up and coming producers are acknowledging each other and are showing respect torwards each other in the scene.

We are lucky enough to have a couple of unreleased, new track/remix from you on the mix in “Dedicated To The Faded” and “Juicy J feat The Weeknd – One of Those Nights (Ray Complex Remix)”.  Are there any more productions or remix that you’re working on at the moment that you can share with us?

I’m currently working on an EP called “Bass Tyrant”. It’s my more “aggressive” project at the moment. More along the lines of trap and future bass. It should be released by June. Other than that, I plan on releasing more originals before then and maybe some remixes. I just started one for Macklemore’s “Wings” last night.

For the tech guys out there, what software/hardware do you use to make your tracks?

I’ve been using FL Studio for about 5 years now.

Finally, what is playing on repeat in your Ipod, what tunes you can’t get enough of it the moment?

The new Shlohmo EP, UZ’s Balltrap Muzic Vol. 1, Sadistik’s “Flowers For My Father”, the Ryan Hensworth remix of Summertime Sadness, Rustie’s Slasherr/Triadzz release. Just heard the new Bonobo today!

This mix has some trap & hiphop vibes to it, as well as flirting with chillstep & future bass genres, making for a really chilled soundscape.
